HOW IT WORKS

The Feldenkrais Method® is based on an understanding of how the brain, nervous system, and the rest of the body cooperate to coordinate our movement. Most of us are more limited in our movement than the design of the human skeleton requires us to be. This is often due to unconscious habits of muscular contraction or holding.

The very nature of a habit is such that it is imperceptible to us under normal circumstances. Our movement and our ability to act in the world are intimately linked to our ability to accurately perceive ourselves. This is what Moshe Feldenkrais, the founder of this method, called our 'self-image.' Our self-image is what guides our ability to coordinate our actions.

Through Feldenkrais lessons students develop awareness of these limiting habits and explore a variety of alternative patterns of movement, and thereby develop a more complete self-image.In this process, students expand their movement repertoire and eliminate unwanted restrictions. As we learn to reduce unnecessary muscular holding, we begin to coordinate ourselves in more efficient and effective was in all of our activities.

There are two ways to practice the Feldenkrais Method.

The first is through Awareness Through Movement lessons. These lessons occur in a group setting. The teacher verbally guides you through a sequence of gentle movements intended to help you develop a greater awareness of how you move.

The second is through Functional Integration lessons. These are designed to meet your individual needs. Communicating through touch and movement, in addition to words, the teacher guides you in your one-on-one process of self-discovery.

Feldenkrais lessons can help you overcome limitations brought on by stress, misuse, accident or illness.
